I am Ageless, Ask me How?
My last few blogs have focused on healthy aging and that’s no accident. As I’m aging, I have found a new passion in finding ways to age in a healthy way and sharing it with others. Many ways have to do with physical health and other ways have to do with mental health. They are both equally important to me. My belief in the mind-body connection cannot be ignored.
My goal is to always bring you something that might help you along the healthy aging path. Today I want to tell you about an important scientific discovery that has helped me stay healthy and have a youthful feeling and appearance.
The latest research in aging has focused on telomeres—the protective caps on chromosomes—which shorten as we age. Shortened telomeres are associated with greater loss of physiological function and with age-related complications. To slow this progression, and ultimately slow the physical signs of aging, we need an intervention that helps preserves telomeres. Science has revealed that the strongest influence on telomere length is diet and lifestyle factors—things we have complete control over.
The basic model of aging shows a peak in physical and mental performance around age 20 with a steep decline thereafter. Unfortunately, some people experience premature aging in which the aging process is actually accelerated. Premature aging results in a quicker rate of functional decline which could manifest into age-related complications such as memory loss, cardiovascular complications, or physical immobility. By slowing this progression, it may be possible to maintain functional capacity as we age and decrease the amount of complications that arise.
Premature aging is caused by a variety of factors; everything from our genes to the environment around us affects how our bodies grow and develop throughout our lives.
- One of the main causes of aging is toxins which are in everything from the food you eat, to the air you breathe, to the water you drink. Toxins produce oxidative stress that causes wear and tear on the body, even on your telomeres.
- Obesity and sarcopenia—age-related loss of muscle—also cause premature aging by creating stress in the body, leading to inflammation and insulin resistance.
- In addition to physical stress, evidence has shown that psychological stress can cause chronically elevated levels of stress hormones and throw the body’s homeostasis for a loop.
- Last, but definitely not least, we are a nation of overfed people, but still severely undernourished. Because we tend to eat the wrong kinds of food, many people receive suboptimal amounts of the vitamins and minerals that our bodies need to function and age gracefully.
At a time when Baby Boomers are reaching retirement age, I have found a company who is investing heavily in telomere research and developing products that allow its customers to age more gracefully. That company is Isagenix.
Their development of Product B, a telomere product, is only the latest of Isagenix products to assist in defying aging, going a step beyond, and targeting underlying mechanisms that lead to telomere shortening. Specifically, the product acts to protect telomeres from an overabundance of free radicals with a combination of ingredients that promote antioxidant enzyme efficiency. Experiments on cells performed in the lab show Product B is capable of turning on expression of the enzyme telomerase, which restores telomere length. The research is fascinating for anyone interested in a longer, healthier life. More research is continuing in this area.
The unprecedented goal of Isagenix is to provide you with solutions that help put you on the path of healthy aging, using optimal nutrition, to slow this aging process down and at the same time improve functional capacity. Isagenix is determined to be at the forefront of healthy aging research with cutting edge, scientifically backed products.
